Frequently Asked Questions about Cat Adoption Cafe

Please reach us at treetopskittycafe@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Founded in 2016, Tree Tops Animal Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit that rescues cats from highly crowded shelters or intercepts them on their way there. Once these cats arrive at Treetops Kitty Café in Kennett Square, we evaluate them, provide any necessary medical attention , resocialize them, and work to place them in safe, loving homes.

Treetops Kitty Cafe provides a welcoming space for anyone looking to unwind in a unique environment with feline residents and also for those looking to find their purrfect feline friend to adopt and take home.

Absolutely! Most of our guests don't adopt, actually - they're just looking for a fun time!

For a small entry donation, guests are welcome to mingle with our adoptable cats, whether they plan to adopt or not! Walk Ins are welcome (subject to availability) but reservations are highly recommended and can be made right here on our website. The donations for café entry are necessary to help our non-profit pay our staff and bills, and to properly care for the kitty residents.

Great question. As a nonprofit, we do not receive government funding and rely on donations from the public to cover our expenses. Your entry donation is a vital part in keeping our doors open and we appreciate your willingness to support us!

Yes! Children must be 5+ to enter the cat lounge and must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please add children to your reservation as you would with an adult. Minors from 14-17 may visit without a parent as long as they have a waiver on file or the parent made the reservation for them. We kindly ask a maximum of 2 children per supervising adult. We do not allow infants, strollers, or car seats inside the lounge.

Our kitties are all vaccinated, healthy, and social, but some are more kid-friendly than others. Staff will guide you during your visit for a safe and comfortable experience for everyone.

We have space for up to 6 people to roam the lounge comfortably. If you want to book the lounge for just your group without other guests, please book and pay for all 6 slots available for the time you want.

The cats are very excited to greet visitors when we first open at 11, making it one of the busiest times to visit us. If you're looking for an upbeat, playful time, visit in the morning! If you're looking for a relaxing, snugglier visit, come in the afternoon. The cats are allowed to sleep when they want to sleep, so don't be surprised if everyone is snoozing during your visit! There's nothing cuter than a sleepy cat.

We have a small, free parking lot for 305 W State Street. We share this lot with 4 other businesses and it can get crowded. Back-up parking can be found anywhere on W. State Street or the streets around us, but it might be metered or zoned, so pay attention to signs. Downtown Kennett Square also has a parking garage that is easy to access and is within walking distance of Treetops Kitty Cafe.

Yes! Our parking lot has one handicap space, our sidewalk is ramped, and wheelchairs can navigate the lounge.

We are so excited that you want to adopt from us! Please visit our Adopt page to read our adoption policies and submit an application. We do not offer same-day adoptions because we treat pet ownership as a serious commitment.

If you visit with a cat and fall in love unexpectedly, submit an application to be considered!

Your best bet is to surrender the stray cat to your local shelter, such as  Brandywine Valley SPCA in nearby West Chester, PA. Post on local message boards on social media that you have found a cat and that it is being taken to a local shelter. Include a picture and a description of its physical attributes. Treetops is not an animal shelter and does not accept stray or surrendered cats.

We never accept cats from the general public. Contact local shelters to see if they have your pet. The Brandywine Valley SPCA has a resource page for more information:

https://bvspca.org/need-help/lost-found-pets

While we understand some things cannot be controlled, please consider working with your cat to make it easier to keep them. Low-cost vet services are available all over our region if finances are a concern.

If you have exhausted your options, contact your local SPCA or Humane Society and ask them for your options. You may be referred to a larger local rescue or foster-based organization. Post on social media and vet all interested applicants. NEVER list a cat "for free to a good home". Unfortunately, some people are only interested in harming animals and will seek out posts for re-homing pets. Check your local Facebook groups for re-homing groups as well.

STOP! Their mother may be close by. If the kittens are resting, warm, or playing, they are okay. Check every 2-3 hours to see if their mother returns. If the kittens are cold, crying, lethargic, or seem ill, move them to safety. Keep them warm with a heating pad and feed them KMR formula every 2 hours. If you cannot do this yourself, please contact your local SPCA for help!

If mom returns and she is friendly, collect the litter with her and take them to safety. You can take them to your local SPCA or Humane Society or you can take them home and foster them. Mom will need to be spayed when the kittens are old enough. Kittens do not struggle to be adopted at shelters and friendly adults do well, too!

If mom is not friendly, continue to feed her and contact your local shelter for information about TNR (trap/neuter/release) so she can be spayed and re-released in the area you found her.

Feral cats and kittens do not need to find homes. They need to be spayed/neutered and given vaccines. Feral cats are resourceful and enjoy their life outside. Many feral cats cannot be rehabilitated. While it's not impossible, TNR is the most humane thing for feral cats instead of trying to domesticate them.
